4 November saw a spine-tingling performance of Elgar’s ‘Dream of Gerontius’ in York Minster, by the Hallé Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Sir Mark Elder. The event was produced by the Ryedale Festival, of which Johnny Minford is a director.
With the largest Gothic cathedral in Europe at capacity, the emotional climaxes could not have been more powerful, with Sir Mark completely in charge of the huge forces mustered for this work.
The concert has been over a year in the planning, and it takes the Ryedale Festival, one of the most highly regarded classical musical societies in the UK, to new heights. The main Festival stages around 50 events over two weeks each July in the beautiful Ryedale, North Yorkshire, supplemented by other occasional concerts like this one, and soirees in London.
The Ryedale Festival has no public funding at all.
